Hi there! I'm an Australian presenter who has been traveling the world with PokerNews for almost four years. When I'm not talking about poker, or writing about a new city, I'm learning about holistic health at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Somehow I manage to combine all of these topics together in here. LG x

Visiting my Filipino Sponsor Child’s Village

May 23, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Two years ago, I wrote about visiting my sponsor child in Cebu for the first time.

I had prepared a long post with photos and all sorts of words about my experience returning again this year, to describe how incredible it was to see how much Bret had grown up, and the house that his mother had finally been able to move her family into.

Instead, all I now want to share with you this incredible video that the AMAZINGLY talented Andrew Dorn, from All Day Pictures, so generously made.

If this video moved you, then I urge you to consider sponsoring a child through Kadasig Aid and Development. I can promise you that every cent goes to the children and families in need.

Seeing the impact that just $250 makes on Bret’s family is beyond what I ever could have imagined. It has completely transformed their lives.

Institute for Integrative Nutrition DiscountIIN is a twelve-month online course, based out of New York City. Joshua Rosenthal, the founder and primary teacher, has an admirable approach to wellbeing, and has round up some of the world’s best thought-leaders to take part in the curriculum, including some of my favourites like Deepak Chopra, Andrew Weil, raw-food pro David Wolfe, one of my all-time favs Annemarie Colbin, and Harville Hendrix.

Let me tell you, it’s not just a course about food. It’s a life-changing experience focusing on health and happiness – complete holistic wellbeing.

The course has opened up a whole new world of friendships with its beautiful community of like-minded people. Thanks to joining an Aussie-specific facebook group for my class enrolment I have made some lifelong friends in my hometown that I will be forever grateful for.

Marianne Williamson LA Lecture

Marianne Williamson Lecture Notes – 13 May 2013

May 17, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

On Monday, I was ecstatic to attend Marianne Williamson’s weekly lecture in Beverly Hills, during a long layover on my way to Mexico. I had just flown in that morning from Melbourne, and hired a car to explore all that LA has to offer (mostly the incredible Abbot Kinney). For months I kept saying to myself “I need to get to LA on a Monday to see Marianne”, and here I miraculously was, completely unplanned (I don’t believe in coincidences).

Qantas Airbus A380 Upper Deck Economy

Qantas A380 Upper Deck Economy Review

May 16, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Qantas recently converted the back portion of their Airbus A380′s upper deck into five rows of economy seating. On my recent trip from Melbourne to Los Angeles (QF93), I was lucky enough to not only sit up there, but to have three seats to myself. I was initially sitting in 36F, which turned into a bed spread across 36DEF!

Qantas Airbus A380 Upper Deck Economy

Qantas Airbus A380 Upper Deck Economy

The Good:

  • The section has only 30 seats, so it’s really quiet.
  • One toilet services the area, so you never have to wait for the loo.
  • Seat Guru highlights row 35 in red due to the close vicinity to the toilets which would usually be bothersome having people standing over you, however this is not the case as the section is so small there was never a queue. Due to the wall next to seat 36D (see below under “The Bad”), even if there was a large group hovering around the loo, this would bother row 35, not row 36.
  • There is a huge amount of free space in front of, and next to, exit row 35, which is another reason why the close vicinity to the toilets is not bothersome as if in the slight change there is one or two people waiting for the bathroom, they have plenty of space by the door to wait.
  • The service personnel were fantastic, and gave the level of attention you’d expect in first class, as their hands weren’t too full trying to cater for such a large section.
  • Seat K has a handy little shelf between the seat and the window (see the beginning of video). That is in rows 35 and 36, but I didn’t see the earlier rows to know if they have the shelf as well.

The Bad:

  • The section is at the very back of the plane (although tailwind movement was not a problem), so when I boarded the flight I had to walk down to the back to go up the stairs. I would suggest either boarding right at the start if you can with your status, otherwise wait until the very last minute to avoid getting stuck behind everyone settling into their seats.
  • The overhead lockers are small, so carry-on baggage storage is limited.
  • Seat 36D would be a nightmare of a seat if this section was full, as there is a wall next to the seat. There is a small crack between the wall and seat 35D so a small child could squeeze through if 35D’s seat wasn’t reclined, otherwise it’s like a confined window seat without the window, and with less space because of the straight wall rather than the curved windowed wall (see video below). It also has a little harness under the seat in front to store bags due to limited overhead space, so this gets in the way of legroom. It could possibly be the worst seat on the plane, which is likely the reason I had the row to myself – it was blocked out when I was checking in.

The Video:

This was taken from seat 36E during landing, so the curtains into Premium Economy were open, with lights on. Most of the flight the curtains were closed, and the lights were off, so it was really quiet and peaceful. I am up against the wall into the kitchen, which has an entrance on either side of behind where I’m sitting. At the end of the video you can see what I mean about the wall against 36D.

A Day in LA: Abbot Kinney

May 15, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Venice’s Abbot Kinney Boulevard is a palm-lined street full of personality, with loads of unique boutiques selling locally-designed clothes, accessories, gifts, art and furniture.

Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice

Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice

Yesterday, I had a 15hr layover on my way to Mexico City, so I hired a car for the day to explore Los Angeles. My first stop was to this strip that I kept hearing so much about!

I was beyond impressed. The street was every bit of what I expected, plus so much more. If you love a touch of boho, then you will be in absolute heaven here. Forget corporate chain stores, this place is full of original style. My gypsy heart was in fashion paradise!

It’s not just shopping that Abbot Kinney is amazing for. Almost every corner is home to an organic cafe with scrumptious whole-food menus. While you enjoy your lunch, you’re bound to overhear conversations between budding actors going over their new scripts, or screenwriters discussing new projects. A waitress explained to me how the street is so full of “industry people”, that on nights like that of the Oscar’s, Abbot Kinney restaurants are bare. If you’re looking for a true taste of the Hollywood lifestyle, then this will give you a much more real, behind-the-scenes experience.

I had a delicious lunch at Feed Body & Soul, a sleek restaurant that claims to be “inspired by the belief that eating well can be a daily indulgence” (cheers to that). Their California-style menu offers the freshest, seasonal, sustainable & organic produce and proteins. I had a well-needed green smoothie after my long flight, and a grain and vegetable mixed bowl topped with seared tofu and a roasted pepper sauce. YUM!

The perfect spot for amazing, organic coffee is TOMS (they serve almond and hemp milk coffee – score!). They provide free wifi, so it’s full of artsy people churning away on their Macs. The cafe doubles as a shoe and eyewear store, and is a charitable hub for their beautiful One For One organisation which is all about giving shoes and sight to children in need, around the world. As you could imagine, the vibe here is magnetic. I didn’t want to leave!

The people around here adore their animals, so you’re bound to be greeted by a pet inside some of the stores. I met the wonderful Sunya Currie, who has travelled the far corners of the world in search for magical beads and semi-precious stones that form the exquisite handmade pieces in her collection. She was relaxing on this couch with her gorgeous rescue dog, Lhasu, who looked just like my Harry, which made me a little emotional being so far away from him. So, Sunya and I enjoyed a chat as I rubbed her little princesses belly.

Not only did my eyes and mouth get a feast along Abbot Kinney, but so did my neck and shoulders after an incredible massage by Som at Lamai Thai Massage Therapy. Oh wow… She walked all over my back and gave it every crack it needed after my 14hr flight. Every single touch she made was just perfect. I couldn’t recommend her more. I got a 30 minute massage for just $30… Worth every penny!

I didn’t get a chance to experience this place for myself because I was jumping on another flight to Mexico City, but I’m dying to try Lavish Tan, an organic product based on brown sugar, that originated here (and is now in Melbourne! whoohoo), and has been labeled by Allure Magazine as the “#1 Spray Tan in USA”. So if you’re in need of a little colour while in LA (and not just bronzing up, they also do teeth whitening), then this is your place to go.

In the end, I very surprisingly managed to control myself and not buy an entire new wardrobe. My idea of overpacking to prevent me from overspending has so far worked a treat. My favourite purchase is this quirky pair of earrings made out of banana skin ($15) from Bohemian Exchange, where the owner’s cat proudly lay on the table by the cash register, and where they have one of the most amazing dressing rooms I’ve ever seen.

If you find yourself with a spare few hours in LA, then I highly recommend escaping the airport and heading to Venice, just a 15 minute drive ($40-$50 in a taxi) from LAX.

It’s safe to say that no place along this strip likes to follow a crowd. If you love a little individuality, then you will adore your time spent on Abbot Kinney Boulevard.

Avery Edwards

The Largest Blessings

May 10, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

On the 7th of May, 2013, a gorgeous baby girl known as Avery Edwards entered the world. Weighing just 7lbs, this tiny little new life has begun her own giant journey; and how lucky she is to be led on her journey by two beautiful parents.

296925_10151637771788923_1049235075_n

Avery’s mother, Allison Newton, has been one of my closest friends since we were fresh out of high school. We crossed paths at the occasional promo gig, strutting around some sort of sporting event scantily clad (wow it’s so strange seeing her as a blonde in this pic!!)

Our friendship really began in 2004, when I told her I wanted to go to the Nickleback concert (don’t judge).

She thought “why not?!”

So off we went, hardly knowing each other, with no idea that it would be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

We’ve been through a lot – multiple break ups from relationships that we each learned many lessons, the blossoming of our marketing careers (at the time), and we enjoyed our “party phase” together throughout our early ’20s, religiously spending every weekend tearing up a dance floor of Melbourne.

Ally

She managed to grow out of that phase long before I did, proudly turning into “Nana Newts” – the one who was comfortable within herself to know when to call it a night “early” (that was, before sunrise). She was the one we would call drunk at 4am and she’d happily pick us up, or the shoulder we could cry on with no judgement; and she’s a hopeless romantic – a passionate believer in true love. She has this beautiful ability to accept people for who they are. She’s refreshingly laid back, enjoying life for what it is. She doesn’t waste her energy sweating the small stuff – something that we all need to master.

friendship

Allison fell head over heels in love with her now fiancé, Jarrod, five years ago. I’ve loved watching them grow together, move in together, build their cosy little family of Aussie Bulldogs (one of which I’m a proud godmother!), get engaged, plan their beautiful wedding that’s to come this October, and now, bring in their own little formation of life that they have created together, Avery Edwards.

Avery Edwards

I went to Allison and Jarrod’s house last night to meet Avery for the first time. When I walked in, Ally was sitting on the couch holding this tiny little baby – it was surreal. She looked so comfortable, so happy, so content. And all her innate motherly qualities had just kicked right in. Throughout her entire pregnancy she has had an extreme sense of peace – even more than usual. All of our girlfriends couldn’t help but notice. Nothing seemed to bother her (except by month 8.5 all the baby questions were understandably driving her a little bonkers), and she was just happily cooking up this bub in her belly as if she now had everything in the world that she needed. And she does.

Watching Jarrod and Allison excitedly share the story about the birth, swapping their versions of what had happened with so much pride, was one of the most loving moments I’ve ever witnessed. They were both beaming. Their lives have just taken the most significant turn — they now have this beautiful little girl to love, nurture, guide and enjoy.

I’m so proud of you Ally.

May 8, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

For many, it can be pretty daunting to start making changes towards a healthier lifestyle, often seeming a lot harder than it needs to be, thanks to the plethora of health information and contradicting opinions that are all over the internet today.

This is when working with a health coach is ideal.

Edgars Mission Chickens

May the Fourth be with You, Little Chickens!

May 4, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

It may be International Star Wars Day today (May the 4th… get it?), but more importantly, it’s International Respect for Chickens Day. In celebration, the wonderful team at Edgar’s Mission created this beautiful, beautiful video that I just had to share (no graphic images are used – it’s simply shares beautiful, heartwarming acts of kindness).

Chickens are the closest living relative to the tyrannosaurus-rex, and they outnumber humans more than 6 to 1, however the 43 billion chickens living on this planet are rarely seen.

Described as inquisitive, intelligent, affectionate and fun loving, our feathered friends have cognitive abilities that rival cats and dogs, yet so few ever get the chance to know human kindness.

Shouldn’t it be normal for humans to be kind?
