    Lynn Gilmartin

Hi there! I'm an Australian presenter who has been traveling the world with PokerNews for almost four years. When I'm not talking about poker, or writing about a new city, I'm learning about holistic health at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Somehow I manage to combine all of these topics together in here. LG x

Visiting my Filipino Sponsor Child’s Home

May 23, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Two years ago, I wrote about visiting my sponsor child in Cebu for the first time.

I had prepared a long post with photos and all sorts of words about my experience returning again this year, to describe how incredible it was to see how much Bret had grown up, and the house that his mother had finally been able to move her family into.

Instead, all I now want to share with you this incredible video that the AMAZINGLY talented Andrew Dorn, from All Day Pictures, so generously made.

If this video moved you, then I urge you to consider sponsoring a child through Kadasig Aid and Development. I can promise you that every cent goes to the children and families in need.

Seeing the impact that just $250 makes on Bret’s family is beyond what I ever could have imagined. It has completely transformed their lives.

Cebu Street Market

A Tour of the REAL Cebu

May 2, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Many people in the Philippines are exceptionally poor — living in shacks, consuming not much more than boiled rice.

Yet they are quite possibly THE happiest people on the planet.

Cebu, Philippines

Their connectedness is inspirational. They don’t have doors on their homes – the mothers of all the villages are outside together, helping, talking, loving. Their gratitude for the simplest things is amazing. Their perspective is grounded and they absolutely love life. They’re not stuck in their story of self-pity.

They have FUN. The kids run around the streets fearlessly, with smiles from ear to ear. Not one tantrum in sight. Every corner you turn there is someone greeting you with so much genuine joy. They’re honest. They’re real. And they are rich with unconditional love.

While we can do a lot to help Filipinos monetarily, we can also learn a heck of a few important lessons from the beautiful people in this place.

I haven’t been to any other islands other than Cebu and Mactan, but I can tell you that I absolutely LOVE it here!

In the following video, we take a REAL tour of Cebu, diving deep into the Filipino street-culture. This was one of the funnest videos I’ve made to date. An amazing experience.

Need a Little Soul Balance?

April 26, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Travel will always be an important part of my life. It has helped me learn to really live in each moment, to be present, and to take notice of what surrounds me at all times, an appreciation that I now try to carry through my everyday.

I’m a big believer that all of us need to take regular breaks. We should have some quiet time at least once per day, a frequent weekend drive someplace peaceful, and once per year (at least) we should all be packing our passport and jetting off! Travel really is the best education you can give yourself.

A retreat is the perfect way to disconnect from the world, and reconnect with yourself, and if I were to recommend a destination for a life-changing chillax session, it would be Soul Balance Retreats.

Soul Balance Retreats

The retreat is run by Dr Emily Mankey, an osteopath, yoga and pilates teacher, personal development coach (and the owner of one of the most beautiful souls I’ve ever met), along with her loving boyfriend, Marc Rovere, a kick-ass personal trainer and nutrition expert. They have such passion to transform peoples lives, just as they have transformed their own, and have set up a unique retreat in Bali, at a five-star location deep amongst the serene hills of Ubud.

It’s not a detox, nor a tree-hugging chant fest. With their broad expertise in so many avenues of wellbeing, they take you on a blissful seven days of physical and mental transformation.

On top of the escape, my favourite part is that they give back. Immersing yourself in other cultures can be one of the most mind-opening experiences of your life. There’s nothing like a bit of perspective to help ground yourself, and Soul Balance Retreat-ers have the opportunity to visit the local village primary school to spend an afternoon helping educate the children and giving a little back. Amazing.

Soul Balance Retreats

I cannot wait to visit this retreat later in the year. If you want to join us, then head over to soulbalanceretreats.com.au.

A Day at Edgar’s Mission

April 4, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

A day at Edgar’s Mission is one of the most special ways you could spend your next day off.

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 10.24.24 PM

Last month, I had the honour of taking my family to Edgar’s Mission, a not-for-profit sanctuary for rescued farmed animals, founded by Pam Ahern, and named after her first rescued pig, Edgar. It is now home to over 250 animals, set on 60 peaceful acres in the fooothills of the Great Dividing Range at Willowmavin, Victoria. Perth

Video: A Tour of Sunny Perth

March 1, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Perth is definitely one of the world’s most liveable cities. It’s so clean, serene, and beautiful.

In the following video I give a tour of some of my favourite spots around town, including King’s Park with it’s stunning views and pristine gardens, beautiful City Beach, along with it’s must-visit place for a beachside feast, Clancy’s Fish Pub. We also drop into Cottesloe Beach where I enjoyed an incredible lunch at Indiana (although I wasn’t able to film inside – let me tell you, it is awesome).

My tour ends at Crown Perth, where I’m located all this week for the Australia and New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT), filming for PokerNews.com and PokerStars.tv.

Video: A Tour of Melbourne

January 29, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

This week, I’m in my hometown of Melbourne, Australia for the 2013 Aussie Millions. I get so excited each January when all of my poker friends descend on my favourite city in the whole world. Crown Melbourne is the host of this prestigious event, so I put together a quick tour of Crown’s surrounding areas, South Melbourne and Southbank, for anyone looking for somewhere nearby to go for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or more!

Featured spots:

  • Crown Melbourne
  • South Melbourne Market
  • Clarendon Street
  • World Restaurant & Bar
  • Federation Square
Galaxy Macau

Tips & Pics: Macau

December 3, 2012 · Lynn Gilmartin

Galaxy Macau

Last month was the inaugural Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) in the casino-haven of Macau. The event was a great success, with a huge amount of well-known poker pros flying in to play in the HKD $100,000 Main Event – the largest buy-in Main Event that Asia has ever seen. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Macau with PokerNews four times, and this trip really impressed me. So much so that it reversed the conclusion I had made last year, that Macau “wasn’t my cup of tea“. Read More →

Auckland, New Zealand

Video: A Tour of Auckland, New Zealand

November 29, 2012 · Lynn Gilmartin

Auckland, known to be the youngest city in the world, and is the largest city in all of New Zealand, with 1.3 million people calling it home.

Despite being comparable in size to Great Britain or Japan, New Zealand has a population of only four million, making it one of the world’s least-crowded countries, and a sanctuary for those seeking peace and relaxation, or, on the flip side, a playground for a thrill-seeking adventure.

Note: if you are planning a trip to New Zealand, then I must suggest spending most of your time in the stunning city of Queenstown, which ranks high on my list of favourite cities in the world.

Queenstown, New Zealand

Tips & Pics: Quaint Little Queenstown

April 1, 2012 · Lynn Gilmartin

The quiet little city of Queenstown, New Zealand, turns into an adrenaline-pumping, snow-coated adventure land during the Southern Hemishphere’s winter. It wasn’t labeled the “Adventure Capital of the World” for nothing. Whether it’s snowboarding, jet boating, sky diving, testing your maniac driving skills, swinging off the edge of a canyon or bungee jumping in the birthplace of this world-famous activity, you’re bound to leave this place with a few extra grey hairs that own a great story.
