Hi there! I'm an Australian presenter who has been traveling the world with PokerNews for almost four years. When I'm not talking about poker, or writing about a new city, I'm learning about holistic health at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Somehow I manage to combine all of these topics together in here. LG x

Qantas Airbus A380 Upper Deck Economy

Qantas A380 Upper Deck Economy Review

May 16, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Qantas recently converted the back portion of their Airbus A380′s upper deck into five rows of economy seating. On my recent trip from Melbourne to Los Angeles (QF93), I was lucky enough to not only sit up there, but to have three seats to myself. I was initially sitting in 36F, which turned into a bed spread across 36DEF!

The Good:

  • The section has only 30 seats, so it’s really quiet.
  • One toilet services the area, so you never have to wait for the loo.
  • Seat Guru highlights row 35 in red due to the close vicinity to the toilets which would usually be bothersome having people standing over you, however this is not the case as the section is so small there was never a queue. Due to the wall next to seat 36D (see below under “The Bad”), even if there was a large group hovering around the loo, this would bother row 35, not row 36.
  • There is a huge amount of free space in front of, and next to, exit row 35, which is another reason why the close vicinity to the toilets is not bothersome as if in the slight change there is one or two people waiting for the bathroom, they have plenty of space by the door to wait.
  • The service personnel were fantastic, and gave the level of attention you’d expect in first class, as their hands weren’t too full trying to cater for such a large section.
  • Seat K has a handy little shelf between the seat and the window (see the beginning of video). That is in rows 35 and 36, but I didn’t see the earlier rows to know if they have the shelf as well.

The Bad:

  • The section is at the very back of the plane (although tailwind movement was not a problem), so when I boarded the flight I had to walk down to the back to go up the stairs. I would suggest either boarding right at the start if you can with your status, otherwise wait until the very last minute to avoid getting stuck behind everyone settling into their seats.
  • The overhead lockers are small, so carry-on baggage storage is limited.
  • Seat 36D would be a nightmare of a seat if this section was full, as there is a wall next to the seat. There is a small crack between the wall and seat 35D so a small child could squeeze through if 35D’s seat wasn’t reclined, otherwise it’s like a confined window seat without the window, and with less space because of the straight wall rather than the curved windowed wall (see video below). It also has a little harness under the seat in front to store bags due to limited overhead space, so this gets in the way of legroom. It could possibly be the worst seat on the plane, which is likely the reason I had the row to myself – it was blocked out when I was checking in.

The Video:

This was taken from seat 36E during landing, so the curtains into Premium Economy were open, with lights on. Most of the flight the curtains were closed, and the lights were off, so it was really quiet and peaceful. I am up against the wall into the kitchen, which has an entrance on either side of behind where I’m sitting. At the end of the video you can see what I mean about the wall against 36D.

A Day in LA: Abbot Kinney

May 15, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Venice’s Abbot Kinney Boulevard is a palm-lined street full of personality, with loads of unique boutiques selling locally-designed clothes, accessories, gifts, art and furniture.

Yesterday, I had a 15hr layover on my way to Mexico City, so I hired a car for the day to explore Los Angeles. My first stop was to this strip that I kept hearing so much about!

I was beyond impressed. The street was every bit of what I expected, plus so much more. If you love a touch of boho, then you will be in absolute heaven here. Forget corporate chain stores, this place is full of original style. My gypsy heart was in fashion paradise!

It’s not just shopping that Abbot Kinney is amazing for. Almost every corner is home to an organic cafe with scrumptious whole-food menus. While you enjoy your lunch, you’re bound to overhear conversations between budding actors going over their new scripts, or screenwriters discussing new projects. A waitress explained to me how the street is so full of “industry people”, that on nights like that of the Oscar’s, Abbot Kinney restaurants are bare. If you’re looking for a true taste of the Hollywood lifestyle, then this will give you a much more real, behind-the-scenes experience.

I had a delicious lunch at Feed Body & Soul, a sleek restaurant that claims to be “inspired by the belief that eating well can be a daily indulgence” (cheers to that). Their California-style menu offers the freshest, seasonal, sustainable & organic produce and proteins. I had a well-needed green smoothie after my long flight, and a grain and vegetable mixed bowl topped with seared tofu and a roasted pepper sauce. YUM!

The perfect spot for amazing, organic coffee is TOMS (they serve almond and hemp milk coffee – score!). They provide free wifi, so it’s full of artsy people churning away on their Macs. The cafe doubles as a shoe and eyewear store, and is a charitable hub for their beautiful One For One organisation which is all about giving shoes and sight to children in need, around the world. As you could imagine, the vibe here is magnetic. I didn’t want to leave!

The people around here adore their animals, so you’re bound to be greeted by a pet inside some of the stores. I met the wonderful Sunya Currie, who has travelled the far corners of the world in search for magical beads and semi-precious stones that form the exquisite handmade pieces in her collection. She was relaxing on this couch with her gorgeous rescue dog, Lhasu, who looked just like my Harry, which made me a little emotional being so far away from him. So, Sunya and I enjoyed a chat as I rubbed her little princesses belly.

Not only did my eyes and mouth get a feast along Abbot Kinney, but so did my neck and shoulders after an incredible massage by Som at Lamai Thai Massage Therapy. Oh wow… She walked all over my back and gave it every crack it needed after my 14hr flight. Every single touch she made was just perfect. I couldn’t recommend her more. I got a 30 minute massage for just $30… Worth every penny!

I didn’t get a chance to experience this place for myself because I was jumping on another flight to Mexico City, but I’m dying to try Lavish Tan, an organic product based on brown sugar, that originated here (and is now in Melbourne! whoohoo), and has been labeled by Allure Magazine as the “#1 Spray Tan in USA”. So if you’re in need of a little colour while in LA (and not just bronzing up, they also do teeth whitening), then this is your place to go.

In the end, I very surprisingly managed to control myself and not buy an entire new wardrobe. My idea of overpacking to prevent me from overspending has so far worked a treat. My favourite purchase is this quirky pair of earrings made out of banana skin ($15) from Bohemian Exchange, where the owner’s cat proudly lay on the table by the cash register, and where they have one of the most amazing dressing rooms I’ve ever seen.

If you find yourself with a spare few hours in LA, then I highly recommend escaping the airport and heading to Venice, just a 15 minute drive ($40-$50 in a taxi) from LAX.

It’s safe to say that no place along this strip likes to follow a crowd. If you love a little individuality, then you will adore your time spent on Abbot Kinney Boulevard.

Cebu Street Market

A Tour of the REAL Cebu

May 2, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Many people in the Philippines are exceptionally poor — living in shacks, consuming not much more than boiled rice.

Yet they are quite possibly THE happiest people on the planet.

Cebu, Philippines

Their connectedness is inspirational. They don’t have doors on their homes – the mothers of all the villages are outside together, helping, talking, loving. Their gratitude for the simplest things is amazing. Their perspective is grounded and they absolutely love life. They’re not stuck in their story of self-pity.

They have FUN. The kids run around the streets fearlessly, with smiles from ear to ear. Not one tantrum in sight. Every corner you turn there is someone greeting you with so much genuine joy. They’re honest. They’re real. And they are rich with unconditional love.

While we can do a lot to help Filipinos monetarily, we can also learn a heck of a few important lessons from the beautiful people in this place.

I haven’t been to any other islands other than Cebu and Mactan, but I can tell you that I absolutely LOVE it here!

In the following video, we take a REAL tour of Cebu, diving deep into the Filipino street-culture. This was one of the funnest videos I’ve made to date. An amazing experience.

Need a Little Soul Balance?

April 26, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Travel will always be an important part of my life. It has helped me learn to really live in each moment, to be present, and to take notice of what surrounds me at all times, an appreciation that I now try to carry through my everyday.

I’m a big believer that all of us need to take regular breaks. We should have some quiet time at least once per day, a frequent weekend drive someplace peaceful, and once per year (at least) we should all be packing our passport and jetting off! Travel really is the best education you can give yourself.

A retreat is the perfect way to disconnect from the world, and reconnect with yourself, and if I were to recommend a destination for a life-changing chillax session, it would be Soul Balance Retreats.

Soul Balance Retreats

The retreat is run by Dr Emily Mankey, an osteopath, yoga and pilates teacher, personal development coach (and the owner of one of the most beautiful souls I’ve ever met), along with her loving boyfriend, Marc Rovere, a kick-ass personal trainer and nutrition expert. They have such passion to transform peoples lives, just as they have transformed their own, and have set up a unique retreat in Bali, at a five-star location deep amongst the serene hills of Ubud.

It’s not a detox, nor a tree-hugging chant fest. With their broad expertise in so many avenues of wellbeing, they take you on a blissful seven days of physical and mental transformation.

On top of the escape, my favourite part is that they give back. Immersing yourself in other cultures can be one of the most mind-opening experiences of your life. There’s nothing like a bit of perspective to help ground yourself, and Soul Balance Retreat-ers have the opportunity to visit the local village primary school to spend an afternoon helping educate the children and giving a little back. Amazing.

Soul Balance Retreats

I cannot wait to visit this retreat later in the year. If you want to join us, then head over to soulbalanceretreats.com.au.

Go Someplace You’ve Never Been Before

April 26, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

One thing that Angel and I will never stop doing is traveling.

Stepping outside your box and immersing yourself in different cultures is the best education you can give yourself. It’s so easy to get caught in the rut of routine, forgetting to truly appreciate what is around you.

Not only is a holiday refreshing because it gives you an escape from the “daily grind”, but because for many, it’s the only time a person may truly experience being fully present. Forgetting about their worries from the past, and not even thinking about what may happen next – just enjoying exactly where they are in that moment.

This is how we should live – everyday.

Travel has helped me learn to really live in each moment, to be present, and to take notice of what surrounds me at all times – the nature, the architecture, the people. Now, when I’m at home I still feel the same amount of appreciation – and it’s bliss.

Travel

To some, the idea of traveling somewhere new can be daunting – especially if the local language is not their own. I still remember going on my first trip without my parents – wow did I cry in the days leading up to take off. Of course, I was completely fine once I was on my way, but our mind can drive us nuts in preparation!

If this sounds like you, then a great way to begin is by taking part in a tour to get a fast-tracked glimpse over a particular region; or a retreat, to get the full experience of relaxation and escape. Knowing that all you have to do is show up and join the ride takes any pressure off, and allows you to get your feet wet in ideas for planning your next trip.

Those that do travel will know exactly how exhausting it can be – leaving you needing another holiday to recover from your holiday! A retreat is the perfect way to disconnect from the world, and reconnect with yourself. By clearing out all the clutter in your mind and allowing room for your creativity, is when the good stuff really comes through. Taking some quiet time like this is one of the most enjoyable, yet productive, gifts you can give to yourself.

As for right now, here’s a little perspective change:

Step outside, wherever you may be, and imagine you were visiting that spot for the first time. Just really look.

Next, go someplace you’ve never been before. If your budget or schedule wont allow for an immediate trip, it can be as simple as taking a walk along a new route, or making a point of trying out a new restaurant or cafe. And treat these as if you were a tourist, visiting from afar. What would you think of all this stuff if you were? Making simple changes like this can really bring the fun back into what can be mundane, everyday tasks.

Last month, I had the honour of taking my family to Edgar’s Mission, a not-for-profit sanctuary for rescued farmed animals, founded by Pam Ahern, and named after her first rescued pig, Edgar. It is now home to over 250 animals, set on 60 peaceful acres in the fooothills of the Great Dividing Range at Willowmavin, Victoria. Perth is definitely one of the world’s most liveable cities. It’s so clean, serene, and beautiful.

In the following video I give a tour of some of my favourite spots around town, including King’s Park with it’s stunning views and pristine gardens, beautiful City Beach, along with it’s must-visit place for a beachside feast, Clancy’s Fish Pub. We also drop into Cottesloe Beach where I enjoyed an incredible lunch at Indiana (although I wasn’t able to film inside – let me tell you, it is awesome).

My tour ends at Crown Perth, where I’m located all this week for the Australia and New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT), filming for PokerNews.com and PokerStars.tv.
