    Lynn Gilmartin

Hi there! I'm an Australian presenter who has been traveling the world with PokerNews for almost four years. When I'm not talking about poker, or writing about a new city, I'm learning about holistic health at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Somehow I manage to combine all of these topics together in here. LG x

Visiting my Filipino Sponsor Child’s Home

May 23, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Two years ago, I wrote about visiting my sponsor child in Cebu for the first time.

I had prepared a long post with photos and all sorts of words about my experience returning again this year, to describe how incredible it was to see how much Bret had grown up, and the house that his mother had finally been able to move her family into.

Instead, all I now want to share with you this incredible video that the AMAZINGLY talented Andrew Dorn, from All Day Pictures, so generously made.

If this video moved you, then I urge you to consider sponsoring a child through Kadasig Aid and Development. I can promise you that every cent goes to the children and families in need.

Seeing the impact that just $250 makes on Bret’s family is beyond what I ever could have imagined. It has completely transformed their lives.

Cebu Street Market

A Tour of the REAL Cebu

May 2, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Many people in the Philippines are exceptionally poor — living in shacks, consuming not much more than boiled rice.

Yet they are quite possibly THE happiest people on the planet.

Cebu, Philippines

Their connectedness is inspirational. They don’t have doors on their homes – the mothers of all the villages are outside together, helping, talking, loving. Their gratitude for the simplest things is amazing. Their perspective is grounded and they absolutely love life. They’re not stuck in their story of self-pity.

They have FUN. The kids run around the streets fearlessly, with smiles from ear to ear. Not one tantrum in sight. Every corner you turn there is someone greeting you with so much genuine joy. They’re honest. They’re real. And they are rich with unconditional love.

While we can do a lot to help Filipinos monetarily, we can also learn a heck of a few important lessons from the beautiful people in this place.

I haven’t been to any other islands other than Cebu and Mactan, but I can tell you that I absolutely LOVE it here!

In the following video, we take a REAL tour of Cebu, diving deep into the Filipino street-culture. This was one of the funnest videos I’ve made to date. An amazing experience.

April 18, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

We all have an internal dialogue, which can sometimes be our own worst enemy, working against us when we don’t keep it in check.

Hero-Slider---Stay-Stacked

Stay Stacked is Here!!

March 23, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

I’m absolutely BEAMING with excitement this week! With so much help from my amazing cameraman-extraordinaire, Andrew Dorn, I’m elated to announce the launch of my new online show, Stay Stacked, based on an article series I’ve been writing on PokerNews!

Hero-Slider---Stay-StackedI’ve never felt so in-line with my life’s purpose, and seeing the way the universe has just opened up and thrown endless amounts of opportunities into my lap this week, has blown my mind. Not a single speed hump has gotten in our way. In fact, miracles have happened multiple times per day. The sun has peeked through the clouds when we needed it to, people have freed up their schedules to take part, and I’ve met some amazing experts along the way. All week I’ve been jumping out of bed with excitement as I watch the project unfold and expand by the minute, knowing that I’ve found what truly makes my heart sing: living and sharing, the “LG: Life’s Good” kinda life ♥

I will be covering a wide range of wellbeing topics, as broad as drinking water, to meditating, to strategic mental routines. While the series is aimed at poker players, all of the information can be applied to everyday life, whether you’re a poker player or not, and I’m just so excited to share it with you.

To kick off the series, I decided to open up my own bag to share some of the snacks I like to keep with me whilst working. I am not a dietician, and this is certainly not a set meal plan, it’s just some suggested options to pack in your back to help deter from eating lesser-quality foods or drinks between meals, to help your body maintain the energy and focus it needs throughout the day.

Some of the products I mentioned in the video include:

Green Nutritionals Superfoods

Imagine if you could take a quick shot of a pleasant-tasting, miracle liquid each day, to be able to give your body a healthy boost to sharpen your mind, energize and detoxify your body, while strengthening your immune system? Well, you can.

Superfoods by Green Nutritionals is a unique blend of the five most nutrient-rich superfoods: Hawaiian Spirulina, Yaeyama Chlorella, Australian Organic Alfalfa and Barleygrass, and Organic Marine Plant Minerals. These products are the kings of “green superfoods”, including powerful plant pigments and carotenoids, plant enzymes, complete plant protein, organic vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

In short, it’s a shot of amazingness that will load your body with more goodness than you could imagine, giving you a brilliant kick-start to your day, removing the need to turn to that morning coffee to wake up, which will likely make you crash shortly after – and reach for more.

Particularly when traveling, it’s hard to eat well, so taking something like Green Superfoods is a brilliant way to take care of yourself.

If you live in Australia, you can find Green Nutritionals products in health food stores, or if you’re from elsewhere then you can order online! Click here for stockist and shipping info.

Loving Earth’s Raw Cacao

Oh my… Loving Earth makes some of the most DELICIOUS products that my stomach has ever made love to. Whether it’s fairly-traded, single-origin, organic fruits, nuts and seeds, superfood powders to add to your green smoothies, or delicious raw cacao treats (like the Coconut Mylk Chocolate I had in this video – YUM!), Loving Earth has got you covered.

Raw cacao beans contain 10% flavonol antioxidants, which has set the world record for the highest antioxidant percentage in any food in the world – it’s four times higher than goji berries!

Cacao is a great source of serotonin, dopamine, anandamide and phenylethylamine (PEA), four well-studied neurotransmitters, which are associated with feelings of well being and help alleviate depression. Both PEA and Anandamide (the bliss chemical) are found in abundance in the brains of happy people and are particularly released when we are feeling happy. Both of these neurotransmitters are present in raw cacao in large enough quanitities to affect the brain and lift our moods.

Raw cacao is the primary dietary source of magnesium, the most deficient mineral in western civilisation, yet the most important mineral for a healthy functioning heart. It also plays a key role in producing energy for the neurons in the brain from glucose. So when there is an abundance of magnesium the brain works with clarity and focus.

So, now you know where all those theories come from that “chocolate makes you feel better”. It does, just in its raw, nutritious form without being processed with mass amounts of sugar and dairy, which blocks all the positive effects.

If you’re from outside Australia, then unfortunately you cannot order this particular brand online, but they are working on a solution for international exports, so sit tight! However, it’s really easy to find raw cacao options at your local health food store across the globe. For those in this fabulous country, I’d be surprised if you haven’t already seen these luscious products grace store shelves Australia-wide, but if not, then check this out to order online.

Beyond Coconut Water

I’m nuts over coconuts – whether I’m frying my food in it, using it as a moisturiser on my skin, chomping on the flesh inside a freshly cracked shell, or drinking the delicious liquid center for a hydrating, body-nourishing treat – coconuts are simply amazing, and described by Beyond as a “nutritional goldmine”.

Coconut water is a natural isotonic which hydrates your body faster than water. Modern science has validated its effectiveness, especially as an all-natural sports drink, without the added sugar, flavours or colours, like some of those awful sports drinks have. It contains the five essential electrolytes that gives your body everything it needs to stay hydrated, including sodium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, and more potassium than you’ll get from a banana!

Beyond Coconut Water is available in Australia and the US, here is all your stockist details.

Other

Blueberries have been labeled a “brain food” because they are packed with antioxidants that help protect the brain and skin. Studies have shown that diets rich in blueberries significantly improved the learning capacity of aging rats. (Source: Blueberries and Brain Health) On top of that, they taste great. So try to snack on a handful of blueberries while you grind.

In the above video, I mixed some blueberries with raw nuts and seeds, which are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins E and A, all which are known as “brain food”. Keep in mind that with everything we eat, it’s all about balance. So while these pack a powerful punch, you don’t want to overload on them either, so try to limit yourself to a handful per day.

Pick up a banana for a quick hunger fix and energy boost thanks to its high dose of potassium, “an essential mineral present in large concentrations inside every cell in the body. In the brain, potassium builds the electrical potential inside brain cells required for electrical signaling between cells. Depletion of potassium from the body decreases the amount of electrical signaling in the brain, resulting in lethargy.” (Source: LiveStrong.com)

Do you have a favourite snack that you can’t leave the house with? Or perhaps a question about something I’ve spoken about? I love to hear from you, so please leave a comment below, or contact me directly.

Perth

Video: A Tour of Sunny Perth

March 1, 2013 · Lynn Gilmartin

Perth is definitely one of the world’s most liveable cities. It’s so clean, serene, and beautiful.

In the following video I give a tour of some of my favourite spots around town, including King’s Park with it’s stunning views and pristine gardens, beautiful City Beach, along with it’s must-visit place for a beachside feast, Clancy’s Fish Pub. We also drop into Cottesloe Beach where I enjoyed an incredible lunch at Indiana (although I wasn’t able to film inside – let me tell you, it is awesome).

My tour ends at Crown Perth, where I’m located all this week for the Australia and New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT), filming for PokerNews.com and PokerStars.tv.

Galaxy Macau

Tips & Pics: Macau

Galaxy Macau

Last month was the inaugural Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) in the casino-haven of Macau. The event was a great success, with a huge amount of well-known poker pros flying in to play in the HKD $100,000 Main Event – the largest buy-in Main Event that Asia has ever seen. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Macau with PokerNews four times, and this trip really impressed me. So much so that it reversed the conclusion I had made last year, that Macau “wasn’t my cup of tea“. Read More →

Sanremo Blog

Tips & Pics: San Remo

October 16, 2012 · Lynn Gilmartin

I’m writing this blog as I sit in the lobby of my hotel waiting for a taxi to take me to Nice, France, where I will begin my long journey back to Australia. For the past 10 days I’ve been in San Remo (or Sanremo, as the locals spell it) to report on the PokerStars.it EPT. When flying all the way to Italy from Australia, it would have been crazy of me to not extend my stay for a few days to take the time and explore. The original plan for my days off work was to spend an afternoon or two in some nearby towns, but we loved San Remo so much that we stayed here the entire time.

Hollywood Hosting Immersive

Hollywood Immersive Competition

September 29, 2012 · Lynn Gilmartin

Hosting Immersive is a program I’ve been SUPER eager to take part in, where a group of presenters spend an intense week living in a Beverly Hills mansion (along with a personal trainer and chef!!), refining their skills with LA’s very best hosting coach and casting director, Maureen Browne! To me, that sounds like an absolute dream!

Right now, Hollywood Immersive and StarNow are running an awesome competition where one lucky person will win a package to take part in the program for FREE! So I whipped together this video for my entry, and I just found out that I’m a finalist! Whooohooooo!

WISH ME LUCK!!
