Green Smoothies in a Mason Jar

After all this time that I’ve been on the Green Smoothie bandwagon, I’ve only just finally bought myself some mason jars. What was I waiting for?? 


I usually make enough green smoothie for a couple of days and would pore the left-over smoothie in a jug or a couple of individual glasses, then cover with plastic wrap for the fridge. Apart from the excess use of plastic, this always bothered me because often the smoothie separates, and I want to be able to give it a good shake, which often led to me re-blending (which means, more cleaning). The plastic wrap also isn’t always airtight, allowing extra oxidisation of the fruit and veggie goodness.

I’m so happy to say HELLO! to the mason jar,with its airtight lid that lets me store and shake up my smoothie as much as I like.

    Hi Lynn, Do you ever freeze your smoothies? I make 2 batches of smoothies in my Vitamix and the containers I have been using are hard to clean. Just bought a bunch of mason jars and am worried about placing them in the freezer. Any advice is appreciated!

      Hi Hilary, I have been told that freezing them is fine. I haven’t done this myself though, as I usually just make enough for my partner and I to drink at the time, and any left overs will be polished off by the days end. You shouldn’t have a problem with freezing the mason jars – the only thing I could think of would be that the lid may be hard to remove as it would be a little frozen when you remove it, but after a few minutes out of the freezer the ice around the lid would have frozen. Or you could always just cover the top of the jar with cling-film instead of the cap. But it would be worth a try for sure. I may try this myself as an experiment over the weekend 🙂

    haha love it 🙂 i recycle my coconut oil and tahini jars and use them (they have nice lids already). i do love the idea of mason jars, but i have a bit of a collection already… on a spending ban!
