| Stay Stacked: Understanding Motivation | 28/10/2011 | Stay Stacked: Understanding Motivation | I found an excellent website recently called The 99 Percent where I read an article about motivation in the workplace. It said "What really gets creative [people] fired up is, well, ourselves. That is, intrinsic motivation. If we can imagine an achievement, see ourselves progressing toward that goal, and understand that we are gaining new skills and knowledge, we will be driven to do great work."
That's exactly how we all started out in poker. So what happens when a poker player falls into the mindset "I am the unluckiest player in the world" after having aces cracked by kings for the third time on the same day? Motivation can decrease in the same way it would for anyone who had a boss at work who wouldn’t allow them to do the great projects that they knew they were capable of. The person is being prevented from succeeding in spots that they believe they should be.
With poker players living on the giant roller coaster of success and failure, a streak of bad beats or poor results is a major factor that decreases motivation much more often than in the average person. That is, if we're not aware of how to maintain control of it.

| More Aussie Millions Antics | 27/01/2011 | More Aussie Millions Antics | I thought the first week of the 2011 Aussie Millions was action-packed, but it didn't even compare to this week! The PokerNews video team has been exceptionally busy driving all around Victoria to shoot all sorts of fun features with your favorite poker players. Although I've been run off my feet, I've had so much fun in the process.
The perfect example is the following video from the Aussie Millions Welcome Party held at Breezes Restaurant at Crown. It's my job to make these videos - how can this not be one of the best jobs in the world?

| Aussie Millions Antics | 20/01/2011 | Aussie Millions Antics | What a week we've already had down under at the Aussie Millions! I'm already exhausted and we're not even half way yet, but that's all thanks to the mass amount of laughing we've been doing in the Crown Poker Room, so I'm ready to see what entertainment the Main Event is set to bring for us next week.

| Bahamas Baby | 06/01/2011 | Bahamas Baby | The most extravagant resort I've ever stepped foot in is Atlantis Resort and Casino in the Bahamas, spread across its very own Paradise Island. There is no possible way you could get bored at Atlantis, but you could most certainly go broke. I was lucky enough to make my first-ever trip to the Caribbean with PokerNews in January of 2010 for the PCA, and in just a few days PokerStars' key series returns to Atlantis with PokerNews there to bring you every notable flop, turn and river in between sipping cocktails while soaking up the reggae tunes and beachside sunshine. Jealous?

| A $250 Difference | 17/11/2010 | A $250 Difference | Last year when I was in Cebu, my dear friend Emily was on an aid-mission throughout the Philippines at the same time. The stories of her experiences in the orphanages and hospitals had me in tears so I instantly sponsored a child, Breth, through Kadasig Aid and Development for the tiny price of $250 per year, allowing him to go to school, receive family assistance and participate in development programs to open opportunities for him.
This year when I knew I was returning to Cebu for work, I instantly set up a meeting with the center so I could visit Breth. The first day I arrived, Kirsty came with me on the 45 minute journey to Tisa, Cebu City. The people at the center proudly told us all about what they do and where our money goes and the success stories of the children and families involved. The passion that these people spoke with was so inspiring. After an hour at the center, we jumped in Kadasig's very own Jeepney, that was donated by a sponsor to drive around supplies and food and children, and headed straight to Breth’s community. Kirsty was so amazing and made some videos throughout the morning, so I put together the below video:
YouTube: Meeting my Kadasig Aid Sponsor Child
When we pulled up I was so overwhelmed. The entire community had come out for this event. There was music playing, and kids dancing as they waited, and they even made a sign to welcome us. Despite not knowing what to expect, this was certainly not it! Breth and his mother, Gina, took us to their home - a tiny little shack with a superman sheet hanging in one corner to divide off Breth's room, and a Strawberry Cupcake sheet to divide off the other corner for his sister's room. Gina had proudly bought bananas and coconuts to drink from for lunch, and all the mothers and children in the town followed us and sat outside the door to watch us. Breth wrote a letter about all the opportunities he's had over recent months with Kadasig and stood up and read it out to the group - obviously this was the point that I couldn't hold back my tears.
We were taken on a tour of the neighbourhood and shown Gina's home that she's been trying to build for two years now. Every tiny piece of left over money she makes selling fish at the market goes to building this home. I asked how much it would cost to finish but they were unsure. They gave me an example cost of finishing the floor = just $75 USD.
I was worried that seeing this would be so upsetting that I would resent coming back to the five-star resort I was staying in for work, however I was pleasantly surprised. Despite the families living in such poor conditions, seeing how happy the children were and the loving sense of community was so uplifting. In the Western world we live so isolated in our big, separate homes with closed doors. Our children are glued to Nintendo's and televisions rather than running around freely with no worries in the world. It made me think, no wonder such sick crimes exist in the Western world compared to those mostly for survival in places such as the Philippines. I believe the isolation and increasing lack of human interaction in our society plays a big role. This made me look up some stats on worldwide depression, and the World Health Organization reported that in the United States alone, it's estimated that up to 21 million people are diagnosed with depression each year, roughly 10 percent of the country, and as many as 25 percent of the population are diagnosed in Eastern European countries, yet as little as 5 percent of South and East Asians suffer from depression. This makes me want to bring up my babies on a tropical island sipping pina colada's as they play out amongst the jeepneys and animals in a world that child molestation, mass murders and rape does not control our fears (as much).
After our experience, Kirsty and I couldn't stop talking about Kadasig when we were back at work. It really is incredible how much of an impact $250 can make on not only a child, but their family and entire community. We managed to round up lots of interest in sponsorships. If you would like to sponsor a child or even purchase a Christmas hamper for a needy family, then please visit Kadasig's website for more information. I guarantee you it's worth it. | 7236_newsimage2373_F54D4D17-A10D-4668-A162-A2FAED333B05.jpg |

| London | 09/09/2010 | London | This month, hundreds of poker-playing peeps will be gathering in The Big Smoke for many reasons: the World Poker Tour which just wrapped up, Poker in the Park last weekend, World Series of Poker Europe coming up next week and PokerStars.com European Poker Tour London later in the month. Basically, a whole lot of poker.
It’s hard not to love London, one of the biggest cities in the world. I’ve been there a few times, and got so excited when I was a kid seeing all the streets I knew so well from my days playing Monopoly. We’ve all seen pictures of the world-famous landmarks and read about the Royal Family, but if you haven’t yet had the chance to actually visit London, and you're going to find yourself walking around Leicester Square shortly, then read on!

| Auckland | 02/09/2010 | Auckland | Auckland, known as the “youngest city in the world,” is the largest city in New Zealand, with 1.3 million people calling it home. It is one of only a few cities that sits on the shores of two major oceans and is dotted with extinct volcanoes. New Zealand, despite being comparable in size to Great Britain or Japan, has a population of only four million – one of the world’s least-crowded countries – making it a sanctuary for those seeking peace and relaxation, or, on the flip side, a playground for a thrill-seeking adventure. Throw in some of the friendliest people on earth, and one of the most elite poker tournaments in the Southern Hemisphere, and you have yourself one hell of a vacation destination.
